    What is SHA-256 in mining?

The SHA-256 algorithm is encryption, in other words, a hashing method that has become the basis for mining Bitcoin and many other cryptocurrencies based on SHA-256. Essentially, it is a mathematical method of making information unrecognizable to such an extent that it becomes unique. In simple terms, it takes any information (transaction data, text, numbers, etc.) and converts it into a unique string of 64 characters. Accordingly, uniqueness provides different ways of application. In the case of mining, it is to make a unique “footprint” on the blockchain network, thus ensuring both transparency and security. This, in turn, is an excellent basis for finance, namely cryptocurrencies. This is how the history of the SHA-256 algorithm began in mass use, cryptocurrencies, etc.

Now this standard defines the requirements for mining equipment and affects the economics of digital asset mining.

Which coins are suitable for the SHA-256 miner?

Antminer SHA 256 is most often used for mining Bitcoin, but this is far from the only coin. Bitcoin Cash split off in 2017, increasing blocks for fast transfers. Bitcoin SV went even further with giant blocks. There are also eCash, Fractal Bitcoin, Litecoin Cash, and a bunch of smaller projects.

The same Asic SHA256 can mine any of these coins. If the Bitcoin rate has fallen, then you can switch to Bitcoin Cash. If it becomes unprofitable there, you can try Bitcoin SV. Experienced miners constantly use the coin that is most profitable at a given moment.

What ASICs should you buy for mining on the SHA-256 algorithm?

Miners choose this algorithm for several reasons. The first is related to stability. In 15 years, no one has hacked the algorithm or found critical vulnerabilities. When tens of thousands of dollars are invested in equipment, reliability is paramount. More ASICs run on SHA-256 than on any other algorithm. There is always an option for a specific budget and conditions. Another reason is related to liquidity, because Bitcoin is accepted everywhere and can be exchanged for fiat at any time without any problems.

Before choosing an SHA256 miner, consider the following information:

Antminer S19 series. Time-tested devices. The S19j Pro delivers up to 104 TH/s, while the S19 XP reaches 140 TH/s. Energy efficiency is around 29-21 J/TH.
Antminer S21. The series delivers 200-270 TH/s with a consumption of 3000-3500 watts. Energy efficiency of 17.5 J/TH makes these devices profitable even with high electricity rates.
Antminer S23. Just released on the market and still expensive. But this is the next generation, more powerful and economical. If you are planning long-term mining, then this series is worth considering.
