A Ukrainian citizen has been ordered by a court to pay eight thousand five hundred hryvnias for using “hidden mining”.
According to InternetUA, a Ukrainian man has been sentenced by the court to pay a fine of eight thousand five hundred hryvnias for having embedded an illegal script for mining the digital currency Monero in a medical website. It is impossible to get a criminal record for this act, of course, but the man will still have to pay the fine. In court proceedings his actions were qualified as the creation and distribution of various viral software, which are necessary for unauthorized interference in the activities of computers. The case of the previously unconvicted citizen of Ukraine is being considered in the court of Rivne.
The investigation believes that the Ukrainian in August 2018 embedded in the program code of the site illegal script “Coinhive”. And he acted from selfish motives and deliberately in order to profit from the “hidden mining” of the digital currency Monero. After the malicious file was launched on the user’s PC, an additional file and some processes were automatically installed, which have an executable code with a link to download a hidden startup in the program’s OS. This is to apply the processing power of his PC’s CPU in order to perform complex algorithmic calculations to mine “digital gold” – according to the verdict.
Ministry of Internal Affairs officials found that a file called “coinhive.min.js.” The file named “coinhive.min.js.” was detected as virus software and also refers to the digital currency miner “Coinminer”. As a consequence of all the above, on 30.05.19, the prosecutor and the accused person entered into a formal plea agreement, as the man admitted that he had committed a criminal offense, which is provided for by Part 1 of Article 361-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. It was also indicated that the man will incur such punishment as payment of eight thousand five hundred hryvnia fine. And in court this agreement was approved.
